Water proofness:
The compass capsule is water proof to all practical depths. The cavity around the compass capsule will get water filled. Remove to ocular and drain. Rinsing both the inside of the instrument and the ocular to remove salt is highly recommended to the keep the reading clear.

Primary direction scale:
The outer side of the compass card has a fine MILS (Mil-radians) 0-6400' scale with 10' resolution and a number every 100'.
Secondary direction scale:
The compass card has a coarse MILS (Mil-radians) 0-6400' scale with a100'˚ resolution and a nummber every 200' on top.

Magnetic balancing:
Global balancing achieved with low center of gravity for the compass card. This technological choice means the card will still tilt with magnetic inclination but the tilt becomes noticable only in steep and stron southern incilnations like in Australia and new Zeeland where the user may need to compensate for the tilt by tilting the instrument accordingly for the most accurate readings.
